Our Story
Booth Cottages were built by Murray and Claire Booth in the 1940s and early 1950s. The prior owner would not sell the beach lot alone, because then "who would buy the other four acres ?" So with trepidation, Murray and Claire bought the rest too. Their first cottage, Windswept, was constructed in 1944, followed by eight more cottages in the ensuing years.
Murray was born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey, where he met and married Claire Waldron. Claire's family hailed from Fall River, MA, and spent their summers vacationing on Cape Cod. The Booths built their clientele from friends and family from New Jersey, college friends from Notre Dame Class of '28, and many other friends, fostering a loyal community.
Murray was a professor at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ. He invited his students to the Cape to help construct the cottages. One of these students had seven children; several of them still rent from Booth Cottages today. Over the years, Murray cultivated loyalty with his love, wit, and the beautiful location on Cape Cod Bay.
For the past eighty years, people have enjoyed Murray's vision. After Claire passed away in 1966, Murray continued their work until his death in 1981. Having no children, he left the cottage colony to his nephews, who strive to maintain the cottages' viability in what is now a highly developed area. The beach lot remains completely natural, and the cottages are surrounded by woods, offering a quintessential "Old Cape" experience.
To this day, many guests cherish childhood memories of Murray & Claire, from clambakes, Brewster awards, fishing adventures, to sand between their toes.
We invite you to join us in creating many happy memories at Booth Cottages on Cape Cod.
